Recess! Then What?

I’m taking a couple weeks off from my usual painting theme of landscape. I’m playing with some new subject matter and want to explore and dig deep into something different; not quite ready to share them, but this work incorporates some of the techniques and exploration I did with the Goddess and Vase series. They are acrylic and mixed media on panels.

It also has roots in my childhood interest in art, so that is very rich for me! It’s like going home. A bit of it feels almost illustrative, so that is also going retro for me!

Initially, I’d considered putting one day a week for a period of time into this work, but it just wasn’t happening. Each painting session required a complete re-programing of my painting space, adjustment in materials, grounds, and reference. So I avoided it. Making the decision to focus on this for a longer period has made all the difference. I’m seeing results that I like and guide me forward.

I see kernels of merit in this work that are exciting. It is full of possibilities. Now, how do I take it from here? This has always been a dilemma for me as an artist. I like to explore and try new things; a variety of subjects and media. That’s why we are artists, right? But it’s so easy to get pigeonholed into a particular style or genre. It’s fine, but when the ideas are flowing, it can be frustrating. But that’s not going to stop me!

It’s completely different work and would require different marketing than the landscapes; hunting down new galleries, new avenues for exhibition and sales. The first thing I’m going to explore is online sales; sites like Satachi Online. This new work is “BIG” so it would also be appropriate for corporate and design venues. That’s fun!

I’ll give you a hint that this work is very wild! Check back in a couple more weeks when I have some of it ready for prime time!
