I have a confession about watercolor. I’ve avoided embracing them. I thought of myself as a pastelist and oil painter. My domain was not watercolor. Of course, in retrospect, this makes no sense. Over the years as an illustrator, I did my share of work in watercolor and became a more than competent draftsman. As a pastelist, I’ve embraced watercolor as a foundational technique that adds spontaneity and exploration to my work.

What I’ve admired and aspired to more than anything else as an artist is a deep and habitual sketchbook habit. Rather than leaving stacks of canvas as a legacy, I’d rather leave shelves and shelves of sketchbooks/journals.

My co-worker/editor, Kevin reminded me that I was indeed a watercolorist and encouraged me to pursue my sketchbooks. So, I started, feeling as though I was a beginner and approached it with a beginners mind; nothing to lose and everything to gain. As I dug deeper and deeper in, I realized that I had to share this in a workshop. If I felt this passionate about sketching, my students must too.

I’m not sure whether artists, on the whole, see the world a little differently. Maybe yes, maybe no. When you’re a fish, it’s hard to see the water, so it’s difficult for me to know for sure. I do know that when I’m in the company of other artists, I have things to talk about and connect with. When I’m in the company of people that are not engaged in some sort of creative endeavor, I’m just, well, bored! I do my best to be polite and I’ll even try to reframe what they are talking about in some sort of creative light. It can be challenging though. Does this make me a curmudgeon?

Artists tend to be very positive and engaged folks. They’re excited about what they are doing and love to share it. That makes talking and connecting fun. It’s infectious too. You get to feed off one another’s positive energy.

Finding a tribe of like-minded artists is important. I know I tend to work in a very isolated, solitary situation. Even though I’m a YouTuber and do tons of social media in reality, I’m by myself most of the time. So when I had the opportunity to go to Bend, Oregon to take a lesson from an artist/friend Eric Jacobsen, I wanted to do it. My student, Graham (aka) Sandy arranged for the two of us to drive out and spend the day with Eric. At first, I jumped at the opportunity, knowing that I’d get a lot out of it, but as the day drew near, all the hesitation started to creep in as did my tendency to want to stay cooped up in my cave. You know how that is…you plan something that sounds really good and then when it comes around you think of all the ways you can squirrel your way out of it! Luckily, despite some initial efforts to do just that, some last-minute complaints about why it was annoying, I packed my gear and jumped in the car with my friend/student Sandy. Off we headed to Bend.

The weather cooperated on the drive out and we were rewarded for our efforts with a spectacular sunset show over the mountain pass. Conversation was easy as we mined the mysteries of art-making. The 3.5-hour drive passed in a snap.

After we had our initial fill of his wonderful space, we settled down for a brief talk about the fundamentals of painting and the creative process. Eric emphasized that he wasn’t going to tell us anything new or that hasn’t already been said by countless art instructors. I loved this. He’s right, the principles of painting are the same for us as they were for Edgar Payne or Joquian Sorolla. We can be assured of the soundness of these principles, we just have to learn them! It helps to have good guides like him!

Eric did two demos for us; one in oil and one in acrylic. For the oil painting demo, he simply stood looking out the large picture window at the lovely winter landscape. He used a limited palette to create his beautiful, loose interpretation of the scene. He emphasized that he wasn’t copying exactly what he saw, but arranging the elements and composing them to create a pleasing design. He worked steadily and confidently. The thing that struck me was his brushwork; it’s both bold and sensitive.

For the acrylic painting demonstration he showed us how he would interpret a photo reference. This time he toned his board using a thin layer of phthalo blue. He approached the piece in much the same way as the oil painting, using the elements of the scene to create a pleasing composition. He moved things about, eliminated unnecessary elements and by doing this created movement and rhythm for the eye. Towards the end, he added some marks or “detail” that draws the eye to his focal point.

After lunch, Sandy and I got set up to paint. What to paint? Sandy chose to set up looking out the window at the same scene that Eric had painted. Good idea! Since I’ve been working on my still life workshop, I thought I’d tackle a still life. Eric had a large table set up with various vases, bottles, some beautiful yellow and red apples, dried leaves and lots of crazy branches and stems. I knew this was too much for me to do in a short time, so I poked around his shelves for another bottle or vase to place in the scene that I could use as my focal point and paint just a small section of the set-up. I didn’t spend too much time hunting around but I found a cool green jar.

I had the opportunity to show Eric the paints I typically use and he made suggestions based on my still life. I sometimes use viridian green but he suggested phthalo green instead because of its transparent quality. The bottle is transparent, so that makes perfect sense! And I love the phthalo colors, so I jumped on that. I really enjoyed painting the still life in his studio…so relaxing and fun to be in a different creative space!

The workshop, coupled with the sparkle of the holidays has been a feast for my eyes! I grew up celebrating Christmas and my favorite part was sitting alone in our living room staring at the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree, looking for my favorite ornaments.
I spent about three months planning and producing the workshop, all the while delving deeper into the genre, gaining more appreciation as I worked. Although I’ve put my time in doing still life, as most art students are admonished to do, I hadn’t quite understood how much creativity it affords, or how much it has the potential to improve my skills. I’m pretty hooked on it now and plan on devoting a good amount of energy towards still life in my personal work during the next couple years.

I loved spending more quiet, contemplative time at the easel. It really reminds me of my illustration days. Back then, I worked small on a tabletop with drawing tools like Carb Othello pencils and graphite. Lots and lots of hours under a Luxo lamp at a little Picket drawing table. Although I wasn’t working by direct observation, I was rendering and working much more detailed than I generally have since. There is something so relaxing and satisfying about that kind of work that I really forgot about.

Last year I had this sort of crazy idea that I would post a YouTube video on my channel every day for each of the twelve days of Christmas. Well, several issues came up, the first of which, what are the official 12 days of Christmas? Turns out it matters who you ask. There is the advent calendar 12 days and then the Christian 12 days . Being the boss of me, I got to choose and decided it was much more fun leading up to the big day rather than after the fact. That settled, I had to decide whether I was going to shoot the video ahead of time or on the day of posting. Ahead of time!

Next, I wanted it to be a gift to my subscribers, not selling anything or a lesson, just a simple gift of appreciation for watching my videos and a wish for lots of art going into the new year. That’s how I envisioned it last year and this year as well.

This year was so busy for me in November and December. How was I going to pull this off again? Of course, video production in my studio has gotten just a little more complex as we’ve really tried to improve the quality, so that also makes it more time consuming. But I was committed to doing it despite any perceived obstacles. When things are hard, that’s where the good stuff is!

I decided to have fun with it and use it as an opportunity to play and venture into the landscape which I hadn’t done in a while. I did all of them on Pastelmat and kept them small. All of them are about 5in x 7in or smaller. This is my wheelhouse, so I knew I could get a few done every day for a few days. But…I had a couple false starts. Yikes! I didn’t get off to a good start, so I was worried it wouldn’t happen at all. It wasn’t so much the paintings that were going wrong, it was the video. I usually have a bit of help and not having done it alone for a while, I was forgetting a few critical things such as FOCUS!! If I intended to get them all done on time, I would have to do more than focus the camera, I’d have to focus my brain too!

I like how the Second Day of Christmas turned out. The strong quality of light and shadow made this one work without trying very hard. It’s a good piece of reference from my trip to Kananaski, Canada. Many of the reference photos are from that trip. The landscape there was unbelievable. I went on a painting trip with Plein Air Magazine’s Streamline Publishing, “Fall Color Week”. It was well worth the effort, money and time invested.
Of course this last one was super fun to do. I really love the sparkles!
I’m glad I took the time to do this project. It’s wonderful practice to paint so much and to share them online for consecutive days. I posted the videos to my Facebook Group/ Marla Baggetta’s Painting Lessons and lots of people followed along and did all of the pieces! Amazing!

I included a link to each of the videos if you click on the painting and for those pieces that are still available for sale, there is a link to my Daily PaintWorks gallery in the painting title.

I’ll try to do this every year! It’s a great way to get good painting energy started for 2020.

Happy New Years!!!

Marla

I recently taught a painting workshop in Italy and a few days later was an art student for the first time in several years. I got to see a workshop from both sides. It was pretty eye opening for me.

My workshop students were a varied bunch that came to Italy to take my workshop for different reasons. Some came specifically to work with me and some came to Italy to paint in the beautiful city of Florence with their friends. Hey, I’m all for painting, no matter what! If I can impart a little wisdom about painting or a little tidbit about materials, I’m very happy. If I’ve got more to offer you, that’s amazing. So it ran the gamut.

It’s hard to be soft and vulnerable when armoring yourself and protecting yourself seems like it’s been a good strategy. I respect that and definitely do engage in that strategy myself at times.

But, when the shoe was on the other foot and I became a student, I had just seen part of my group that was having difficulty being vulnerable, so I was determined to just open up and let it all in. For me that was being a blank slate as much as possible. I tried not to filter or to organize what was presented with all the other so called “knowledge” I have about drawing and painting. I listened and participated. I’m so thrilled with what I gained by doing that! Some of what was taught was familiar but some of it brand new. I had several of those “aha!” moments that I hope to give my own students. It felt amazing and powerful.

I also got to see how another instructor organized material, presented, communicated to and encouraged his students. Norberto is an expert in his field, passionate and open. He’s also organized and clear. Even though there was a bit of a language barrier, it seemed to work in our favor as we all had to work a little harder to grasp the sometimes complicated concepts he presented. It was a group the gelled really well over the course of the workshop.

I also realized very clearly why my students always want to have exactly the materials on my list and why it’s so important for me to be very specific. I wanted to try what Norberto was doing. Even while realizing I wasn’t going to get nearly the beautiful results he gets, I wanted to emulate what he was doing as best I could. Materials are only a small part of that, but they are a part of it. If you don’t have the right stuff, you can’t even get going. But you know what? It was ok because I had to make a trip to the Italian art supply store in Florence and feel what that was like. Not easy! After a couple of trips into one of them, the lady warmed up to me and even gave me a free sample! It was good for me to be vulnerable in that way too.

I’m home now and very, very excited about putting into process everything I learned as both an instructor and student. I have one more live workshop this year before I settle in and concentrate on painting and new online lessons which will no doubt reflect my new insights. I’ll be back in Italy next May to teach another workshop that will dig deep into the mystery of the light and lifestyle of Italy. The beautiful Palazzo Santo Spirito of Florence will again be our classroom. Come and join Debra, Ivano and I, in May 2020! They are amazing hosts who offer not a tour but an authentic experience of Italy.

In the meantime, I wrote another blog post a number of years ago about how to be a good workshop participant and thought it would be worth re-posting now.

You’ll be disappointed if you don’t have the materials.

Do test-drive any new equipment. Just give a call and find out whether this would be acceptable.

Do be on time – It’s disruptive to the instructor and the other students if you’re trying to get set up when everyone else is ready to go. If you know you’ll be late, call ahead and let the instructor or coordinator know.

Do the work – Try the exercises and suggestions that the instructor makes.
I was eighteen years old when I started Art Center; So young and naïve! I was the youngest student in all my classes. Most everyone had a degree from another college. There was only one other student that was nearly my age. He only lasted two trimesters. Art School went so quickly and there was no time for long term, rigorous study of each topic. Learning takes extended time and commitment. I thought I was committed, but I was really committed to creating a portfolio and graduating, not truly committed enough to the craft of creating art. I didn’t understand discipline or drive and the time went by way too fast!

Fortunately for me, I did learn a thing or two at Art Center, but in hindsight, not nearly as much as I could have. I was probably too young! I didn’t appreciate the opportunity to study with some of the greats in the design and illustration industry. I was so focused on the “portfolio” rather than how to gain the skills to create it!

After Art Center I worked as an illustrator but found my drawing skills lacking, so I spent as much time as I could at life drawing sessions and keeping a sketchbook. I learned on the job to draw. It was pre-internet days, so you couldn’t just find a picture of what you needed on a computer from your house, you had to go out and scrounge up “scrap” from the library to take photos of friends and family if you needed people to pose for you. We kept a “scrap” file of photos of everything from skies to architecture to bunny rabbits. It was a very coveted and valuable thing to have an extensive file! But having good reference is just a small part of good drawing.

My art education didn’t end in California. While I was still working as an illustrator in the early 90’s after moving to Oregon, I began painting the landscape in pastel. I taught myself how to work with the medium, at first mostly by trial and error. When I became a bit more serious about it, I sought out artists whose work I admired. I studied and eventually took two workshops from Richard Mckinley who is a fabulous, generous instructor. He sets the bar very high!

Soon I began to be invited to teach classes and workshops which I found taught me just as much as I was passing onto my students. Teaching forces an artist to verbalize this thing that is very nonverbal and therefore break it down into an understandable process. It also makes you walk your talk.

Now working as an instructor takes up most of my time, but I’m still learning and finding those gaps in my understanding of my craft. If I have them, my students likely have them and they need to be addressed. So I keep studying and honing my skills. It’s a wonderful thing that we can paint for a long, long time.

I think students can get frustrated if they don’t see the results they are after right away and are sometimes looking for the magic bullet, be it having the right colors or a particular technique or formula. Edgar Payne said “Rules were never meant to be formulas for building pictures, but rather , to instruct in the storing up of knowledge and aiding skill or facility which may be brought forth later.”

What I believe is just as important as continuing to improve painting skill, is staying open minded and having great discipline. These two qualities let us make the most of new ideas and information. It’s a wonderful and magical thing about painting. Drawing and painting every day when humanly possible is really the way to get better. It’s like practicing the piano; you have to build your skills and keep them limber. They will fade if you don’t. It’s the use it or lose it principle.

Looking at everything out there both old and new is also part of being a creative. This is just staying in the flow. Study both the old masters and the works of contemporaries whose work you admire. Checking out Pinterest and other websites to stay current on what your peers are up to is fun and smart. I like to pursue Powell’s books because they stock older out of print art books which to me offer some of the best art instruction. Old school illustrators like Andrew Loomis could really draw and compose. Some of the language is out of date, but the information is unrivaled! Some of my favorite artists are Charles Burchfield, George Bellows, George Inness, Rockwell Kent and Edgar Payne just to name a few. I love looking at the composition of N.C. Wyeth and Degas. The Canadian Group of Seven provides endless inspiration as does the draftsmanship of Sargent and modern illustrators like James Gurney.

Honest and thoughtful critiques are of course part of the learning for any artist. I’m not selling here! I’ve been grateful for those in my life who haven given my their honest feedback. My ex-husband who I met at art school was great at giving critiques. I think it’s always helpful to have a trained eye weigh in on your work. It’s almost impossible to be objective when you are so “in” it. It’s much easier to see what’s happening in someone else’s stuff! It’s also wonderful to get feedback from “the man on the street” so to speak…people that will give you their honest reaction but are not necessarily artists or even have artistic sensibilities. I can always count on my mom to tell me what she thinks about my work!

The bottom line for me, is painting is a lifelong, fascinating endeavor that I will never finish or come to some ultimate conclusion with. I hope here and there, I’ll make some good work, maybe even darn good work. I’ll never finish and I’ll always need to push myself and my students. I hope I get to hold a pastel and a brush for a very long time.

Here are just a few of the resources that I have valued over the years to help me to continue to study and grow.

Books:

Carlson’s Guide to Landscape Painting by John F. I was working inside, another day spent mostly at my computer desk as I’m in the midst of a push to get some new lessons completed, arranging travel for upcoming workshops and just generally trying to be a more organized, artist/small business owner! They are tighter and some of them darker. Some of them are on Canson paper and are really blended! I wouldn’t have thought that I’d enjoy any of that work now, but perusing through, there is something sort of interesting and good about them. I’m really glad I have these slides!
I’m sitting in a restaurant in Lake Zurich, Illinois feeling quite satisfied with myself. I just finished teaching my three day “Loosen Up” workshop to a group of 15 eager and engaged artists. Wow, I’m tired, hungry and just a tiny bit cold, but couldn’t be happier. Another week when was fortunate to teach folks to paint for a living.

It would be difficult to pick a highlight of the trip. Was it that I left Portland on a gorgeous Thursday morning and sat on the plane next to an awesome lady who works on co-dependency advocacy? Was it landing in Chicago and being promptly scooped up by my hosts Jay and Frankie Johnson who own Main Street Art Center? We even got a little bit of snow thrown in for a little excitement.

Or maybe it was the deep, rich dive my students took into the work of creating art? Yep, that’s it!

I’m reminded that we are doing more than just painting. I get to teach more than painting…I’m helping folks to transcend themselves, to master their disinclination to create, to push past their long held patterns and to break out beyond themselves. I’m a guru with a little “g”. Guru according to Merriam Webster’s #2 definition is : a teacher and especially intellectual guide in matters of fundamental concern.” I say this with humility and appreciation but at the same time, I need to own this.

Painting is important to people. It heals people who have been through trauma. It inspires those who need and want inspiration. It connects people with a shared interest. Mastering painting is a challenge that’s a lifelong pursuit so we need support and guidance along the path.

Sarah was so excited to be in the class. She’s a bubbly, positive soul. She even printed out the PDF from my Light & Shadow online workshop and spiral bound it. So sweet!

I’m not like her. I have a dark and sad side to me that I can easily wear on my sleeve. So, being around souls like her does me good and reminds me that I don’t have time for the pain and I don’t have any excuse to indulge in it. When we said our “goodbyes”, she told me that there should be more “Marla’s” in the world, but I need to be around more “Sarah’s”. Thank you Sarah. You make me better and more determined to bring my best self out to play every day.

Thank you Audrey! At every workshop I ask each student to introduce themselves and tell the group a little bit about themselves as a painter and to tell me what their intention for the workshop is. I could tell she was clear about what she wanted but it wasn’t something easily achieved…she wanted to express her feeling for a “thing”, ( I’m paraphrasing, so excuse me). But moving beyond a representation of the visual field to an expression or impression of our manifest existence is something I strive for in my own work. At one point or another, ( and this point comes at different crossroads for each of us), I think we are no longer satisfied with merely capturing faithfully what we see. Painting what we see is pretty wonderful in of itself, but I think we humans are impulsed to express our existence somehow.

Every student at this workshop showed up with an openness and work ethic that was impressive. It’s hard to show up that way. It’s hard not to try to protect oneself particularly when it comes to art. There is so much self-judgement and cultural judgement associated with art and being an artist. We’re very, very hard on ourselves which can lead to getting pretty stuck.

In my workshops, I’m asking students to take a leap of faith…to do things differently and to see things a little differently. I’m asking a lot. But, I try to create an environment where it’s safe and maybe even comfortable to do that. I know it’s still hard. Thank you, thank you for letting me be a little “g”.

Happy Painting!

My Mom is going to hate this post but here goes. It’s been a dream of mine for many years to take off into the unknown and paint. I’m not sure what that means other than letting go of everything that feels safe and sound and getting in a car/RV and get painting.

Two years ago my mom and I drove from Portland to Albuquerque in my minivan. We hit some of the most incredible spots in the West; Arches National Park, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Monterrey just to name a few. It was amazing but way, way too short. So many of the places I wanted to stay for a couple weeks and really paint and soak in. I’ve traveled extensively throughout the states to teach workshops, but rarely do I really get to linger in one place to get the flavor and feel enough to get a connection to paint a place well.

I’m not getting any younger, but I’m getting braver! So I am hatching a plan with a friend to venture out on an extended trip. Rent or buy a suitable RV, fill up on canvas, paper, paint and pastels. He will need other gear, but that’s over my paygrade as it involves big cameras and lenses. He is only game so far, so I’ll go solo for most of my journey as I see it. But, I know that there are a lot of badass women painters out there to join up with!

I’ve been totally inspired by some other painters, like Aaron Schuerr and Mitch Baird. I think it’s easier for men, (sorry but it’s true for me), to think about venturing out on extended trips. Ladies, prove me wrong please!

Calling all badass lady painters, past students with a room to share for a night in exchange for a lesson, a small painting or just a good conversation about painting! I’m coming your way! My plan is to start in Portland, end up on the east coast after about 4 months then hop on a plane to Italy and spend another 3 months in Europe or other! Now that sounds exciting!

Two years ago I was a demonstrator at IAPS. It was amazing; fun and challenging. There were lots of standout moments. Watching the paint around, doing my demonstrations, meeting with fellow instructors and students, to name just a few. IAPS is without a doubt the signature event for pastelists.

I decided to take a break from IAPS this year, having presented for four events in a row, I felt it was time for some up and coming artists to have a chance to shine. I am grateful that I’ve had my opportunity to be on center stage at such a prestigious event. I’ll miss seeing everyone and will definitely plan on attending and presenting( if I’m chosen again), in 2021. So IAPS is on my mind!

But what impulsed me to write this morning was a moment from IAPS 2017 that has stuck with me…I was in the wrap u p meeting for instructors, sitting around a patio table with Liz Haywood Sullivan, Richard McKinley, Tony Alain, Desmond O’Hagan…you get the picture. Richard has always been a generous and gracious college so I’ve learned to pay attention to him. We were talking about our presentations and some artists were mentioning that they’d completed several pieces in the time allotted and still had extra time. Richard commented that we should dig deeper.

At the time, I sort of reacted negatively to this. Thinking that not all the artists work in the same way or with the same intention. One month earlier I had been at the Plein Air Convention in San diego and what had stuck with me from that event was something an audience member had shouted out during one of Eric Roades presentations about selling art. This artist shouted from the peanut gallery , “Paint better paintings”, in a snarky response to Eric’s question about how to go about selling more. Both Richard’s comment and this anonymous guys unsolicited shout, stuck with me. At first not in a good way. I was offending a bit by both comments; creating to my own concepts and perceptions of myself as a painter.

I’ve been focused on creating online lessons and all that that entails. Lots and lots of computer time, learning about cameras and lighting, writing curriculum and trying to make sense of megabytes and gigabytes. I’ve had to learn how to be a better business person and hire the right people that understand my mission and orientation to my work. All of this has been a wonderful and rich challenge which I completely welcome. But the core of my business is making art and not just making art, but mastering a medium and creating art that forces me to grow.

I’ve spent my whole adult life in this pursuit, but realize there are plateaus that we reach. It’s important to analyze and consider how to push past these if we are to keep moving. To that end, I started working from some photos that I took when teaching in Colorado. It was a very memorable workshop. Everyone was so enthusiastic and excited to be painting. The first day we painted plein air at an incredible location in Parker, CO. After many, many months, I’m finally getting around to digging into this group of reference photos. When I started, I found myself somehow interested in more texture than I’ve been getting with Pastelmat and decided to grab a piece of Uart that I had in my drawer. I did an fluid acrylic underpainting on the first one and liked how the texture was building. It’s a whole different world from Pastelmat.

So back to digging in. As I mentioned much of my time these days is developing, filming and producing online lessons. Yes, I do sell these, but for me it’s more than that. It’s a passion of mine to share my journey as an artist. I know how fortunate I am to spend my time in the pursuit of beauty. It’s my day job! If I can help you, wherever you may be on the path of that same pursuit, that’s a victory for both of us!

This year I’ve been working hard, and I mean tons of hours on a new monthly series of lessons that I’ve prepared and have ready to go for my students. We’re trying to get everything perfect on the website, so students will have a great experience learning online. I’ve tried to put together everything I know about painting; tackling the hard stuff, like starting, finishing, what to do about foregrounds, how to include structures and really anything that I struggle with or get lots of questions about. I want my online lessons to be the best pastel lessons out there. I want everyone to get more than they expected and feel supported as an artist. That’s how I’m digging into teaching.

Digging into both painting and teaching. It feels like a lot and it is. So?

Happy Painting,

Marla
